AIKIDO ( in free translation understood as a way to harmonize interior strength: ai -harmony, love; ki – human’s interior strength; do – way) was created by master Morihei Ueshiba, who studied Japanese martial arts at the turn of XIX and XX century. In 1927 he opened first Aikido school in Tokyo, which was working untill 2nd World War outbreak. After the war its activity was revived and from second half of preceding century Aikido strated to get through first to the USA, and next to Europe. Aikido is one of the most sublime and sophisticated martial arts, which ‘on its higher levels becomes an effective discipline improving development, integration and using the all human’s, physical and spiritual strengths’ (Adeli Westbrook and Oscar Ratti: ‘Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere’). The perfection in Aikido lies in ideal harmonizing with opponent’s movements during fight. Thanks to variety of techniques (ability to use a stick (club) or sword, to fight in sitting position and to use pivots and throws) and its dynamism, Aikido is a very spectacular and impressive martial art. (Jacek Wysocki: ‘Aikido bez tajemnic’). Aikido is not a technique or a way of fight with opponent – it is a way to bring peace and unity back to world and to make people one big family (M. Ueshiba, cit. Jacek Wysocki: ‘Aikido bez tajemnic’). A consequence of such attitude is inter alia fact, that Aikido, as one of several (if not the only one) martial arts, doesn’t allow sport fight (even during training) or straight rivalry. In this meaning Aikido is not a sport discipline. The only admissible form of rivalry, are enacted fight demonstrations or forms presentation (kata). Aikido requires peaceful attitude towards all people, not striving for being strong just to defeat the adversary (M. Ueshiba, cit. after Jacek Wysocki: ‘Aikido bez tajemnic’). All above Aikido features cause, that this art has a huge educative value. Each trainer, who has the highest qualifications, aside from practicing, tries to form character of his pupil putting emphasis on self-discipline, patience, regularity, persistence and positive attitude towards people and surrounding world. |
